Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) at Crestpoint Psych Services

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is a contemporary, evidence-based approach that helps adults develop psychological flexibility—the ability to respond to internal experiences with intention rather than avoidance or self-criticism. Rather than focusing on eliminating anxiety, stress, or difficult emotions, ACT emphasizes learning how to relate to them differently while continuing to move toward a meaningful, values-driven life.

ACT is particularly effective for adults who feel stuck despite insight, who experience chronic anxiety or stress, or who find themselves caught in cycles of avoidance, overcontrol, or harsh self-judgment. It is also well-suited for neurodivergent adults and individuals whose internal experiences are intense, persistent, or difficult to regulate through traditional cognitive strategies alone.

In ACT, thoughts are not treated as problems to be fixed or argued with. Instead, clients learn to observe thoughts with clarity and distance, reducing their power to dictate behavior. Attention is intentionally redirected toward what matters most—such as purpose, integrity, connection, autonomy, or growth—and therapy focuses on taking aligned action even when discomfort is present.

Core skills developed in ACT include:

  • Mindfulness and present-moment awareness

  • Increased capacity to tolerate and make room for uncomfortable emotions

  • Clarification of personal values and priorities

  • Committed, purposeful action in the presence of distress

  • Reduced avoidance, emotional shutdown, and rigidity

At Crestpoint Psych Services, ACT is delivered with precision and intention. The focus is not symptom suppression, but building a life that is guided by values rather than fear—supporting resilience, flexibility, and sustained psychological growth.
