Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

at Crestpoint Psych Services

Exposure and Response Prevention is the gold-standard, evidence-based treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It is also highly effective for phobias, panic disorder, social anxiety, and other conditions driven by avoidance and fear-based coping.

ERP helps adults gradually and intentionally face feared thoughts, sensations, or situations—while reducing reliance on compulsions, reassurance-seeking, avoidance, or other safety behaviors that provide short-term relief but reinforce long-term distress. Over time, fear loses its grip, and confidence in one’s ability to cope increases.

Treatment is collaborative and strategic. Together, we develop a structured, stepwise plan that targets your specific patterns of avoidance and compulsion. Exposures are conducted in a controlled, supportive manner, with careful attention to pacing, readiness, and clinical judgment.

At the same time, response prevention focuses on interrupting habitual reactions such as:

  • Repeated checking or mental reviewing

  • Seeking reassurance from others

  • Avoidance or escape behaviors

  • Rituals meant to neutralize discomfort or uncertainty

As exposures are repeated without engaging in these behaviors, anxiety naturally rises and then falls—without needing to be “fixed” in the moment. This process retrains both the mind and nervous system.

ERP promotes three core mechanisms of change:

  • Habituation: Emotional and physiological responses decrease with repeated, intentional exposure

  • Distress tolerance: You learn that discomfort is manageable and temporary

  • Inhibitory learning: New learning occurs, weakening fear-based predictions and increasing psychological flexibility

At Crestpoint Psych Services, ERP is delivered with precision, discretion, and respect for complexity. The goal is not to eliminate anxiety entirely, but to restore autonomy—so fear no longer dictates your decisions, behaviors, or quality of life.
